How Our Dogs Get Here

Most of the dogs in our care come from large-scale rescue efforts. Once they arrive at BARKS, we focus on decompression, daily care, and building confidence — so they’re truly ready when it’s time to go home.

Step 1

Find your match

Browse the dogs currently available for adoption and get to know their personalities, needs, and quirks. Every dog comes with honest notes from our staff — so you can find a companion who fits your lifestyle and energy.

🐾 FAQs

How do I know if a dog is right for me?

We’ll help guide you! Our staff get to know each dog personally, and we’ll match you based on your lifestyle, preferences, and experience. You can also meet the dog beforehand to be sure it’s a good fit.

What’s included in the adoption fee?

Every adoption includes spay or neuter surgery, core vaccinations, and a starter kit to help you settle in. We also offer post-adoption support, including check-ins and discounts at Sturgeon County Kennels.

Can I return a dog if it doesn’t work out?

We always want what’s best for the dog and for you. If it isn’t the right fit, we ask that you contact us so we can help rehome the dog properly. We never judge — life happens.

Do you adopt out dogs that were seized or rescued?

Yes. Many of our dogs come from rescue or seizure situations through our partnership with enforcement agencies. All dogs are evaluated for temperament and health before adoption.

Can I adopt if I live outside Sturgeon County?

Absolutely. While we’re based in Sturgeon County, we adopt to responsible homes throughout Alberta. Just be prepared to travel to the kennel for your meet-and-greet.

Can I apply for more than one dog?

Yes! You can apply for multiple dogs if you're open to different fits. Just let us know your preferences and we’ll guide you toward the best match.

How long does the adoption process take?

It varies. Once your application is approved, we aim to schedule a meet-and-greet within a week. If all goes well, you could bring your dog home shortly after.

What if I rent my home?

No problem — we just need to confirm that your landlord allows pets. A consent letter from your landlord does the trick.

What if the dog has special needs or quirks?

We’ll always tell you what we know, from separation anxiety to leash manners, so you’re not caught off guard. Some dogs need more patience, and we’re here to help you support them.

Can I adopt a dog as a first-time owner?

Yes, many of our dogs do well with first-time owners. We’ll suggest dogs with the right energy and training needs to set you up for success.

Are your dogs good with kids/cats/other dogs?

We include everything we know in each dog's profile. If there’s uncertainty, we’ll tell you that too and help you make an informed choice.

What support do I get after adoption?

We check in at 2 weeks and 3 months, offer advice, and give you a 15% discount at Sturgeon County Kennels for the first month.
